In Imphal, a minimum of four fatalities have been reported, alongside thirteen injuries, and the aftermath of extensive flooding in Manipur due to heavy rains from cyclone Remal has affected over one hundred thousand individuals, as per official sources.
Continuous rainfall for the past week, compounded by cyclone Remal, has led to widespread flooding in the northeastern state. The water levels in numerous rivers flowing through Imphal city are rising swiftly as a result.
As per a report from a local newspaper in Imphal, five individuals, two in Senapati and three in Imphal West district, lost their lives between May 28 and May 31. According to the most recent update from the Relief & Disaster Management Department issued on Friday evening, a combined total of 126,950 residents across 255 villages and localities have been impacted. Additionally, 16,364 houses have been damaged, while 20,504 stranded individuals have been rescued in the state.
Since Sunday, there has been a swift rise in water levels in many rivers flowing through Imphal, causing overflow in various areas of both East and West districts. According to official reports, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was dispatched to assist in both Imphal West and Imphal East districts. Additionally, the air force, navy, and army were mobilized to aid in relief efforts specifically in Imphal West district.
As per the report, aid supplies were provided to various flood-affected regions, encompassing Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Jiribam, Noney, Kangpokpi, Tamenglong, Chandel, Churachandpur, Senapati, and Kakching. According to updates from Assam Rifles, actively involved in the rescue operations, a total of 2,561 individuals have been rescued thus far, comprising 969 men, 992 women, and 601 children.
