On Sunday morning, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit close to the Chiapas coast in Mexico, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
The Mexican national civil protection agency shared on social media that they were monitoring the situation, noting no initial reports of damage. In Guatemala, where the quake was felt in the capital, Guatemala City, the country’s disaster agency, CONRED, reported structural damage in Quetzaltenango and San Marcos, near the border with Mexico. This included a road blocked by a landslide.
Both the U.S. Tsunami Warning System and Mexico’s navy have stated that there is no danger of a tsunami occurring as a result of the earthquake.
